As 2020 comes to a close – and we all slow down to enjoy the holidays – this season offers an opportunity to look back on what we’ve accomplished during this very challenging year.
Like everyone else, the members of the Young Women’s Initiative of Minnesota (YWI) Cabinet had to switch from in-person meetings to Zoom. We didn’t let the lack of togetherness sideline our work! We went ahead and launched the View from Gen Z blog series, covering topics ranging from COVID-19 isolation tips, to social justice, to managing stress. We conducted a survey to learn more about the impact of COVID-19 on young women and girls across the state. Then, using the survey results, the YWI Cabinet developed a report that identifies key solutions created by young women, such as relief from student debt, broadband internet access and expanded access to healthcare, among others. We also held a virtual wellness event for young women to connect, rest and heal through dialogue and restorative movements. And we participated in a series of community conversations that YW hosted this year on racial equity and social justice and their impact on all parts of our lives. Click to watch a recording of our conversation.
In 2020, we’ve faced a pandemic, global uprisings for racial justice, school closings, and economic upheaval that has led to lost jobs, homes, and stability across the country. These challenges have impacted all of us. Yet programs like the YWI Cabinet have offered support, connections, and hope in challenging times.
As we celebrate our accomplishments, we are grateful for the support of so many including the Women’s Foundation of Minnesota, the MN Governor’s Office and our host partner, YWCA St. Paul. I don’t think anyone will argue that 2020 has been hard. But our wish this holiday season for all members of this blog community is health, happiness, and better times ahead in 2021!
